"A little Black girl learning Mandarin is not far-fetched...that same little Black girl mastering Mandarin, I'd say that's extraordinary. And that's exactly what my daughter Sakai is doing.

In many ways, language is the gateway to cultural awareness and acceptance and I am confident that Transfiguration Chinese School is providing my daughter with the skills for both.

The other day we went into a bakery in Chinatown and I asked, 'duō shăo' for the price of the bread. She told me the price and I handed Sakai $20.00 to give to the clerk and Sakai said, upon handing it to her, 'èr shí kuài qián.' Needless to say, I was amazed and had no idea what she said. But, the clerk knew and smiled with joy. I asked Sakai, upon exiting, what she said. She told me, 'I said twenty dollars.'."  -- Nysheva-Starr
